You may have lived in Michigan for years, or you may be considering a move to the state. Either way, if you have not investigated the Michigan State Recreational system (State park system) you are missing out on one of the finest gems the state has to offer! Encompassing six state forests, four National parks, and 97 state parks, the State Recreational system gives everyone a chance to enjoy the tranquility of nature.
Just minutes away from Hidden Lake is Island Lake State Recreational area, a 4000 acre park that is visited by over one million people each year. The beautiful Huron River runs through the park, providing spectacular scenery and views from the various biking and hiking trails. Canoes are available for rent, to get a closer look at the river and its many inhabitants. Rustic camping is allowed along the river, for those who like sleeping under the stars.
Three different trails are available: the paved bike trail is 4 miles long, and there are two hiking trails of 5 and 9 miles each. Island Lake State Rec is also home to one of the safest shooting ranges in Michigan.
It is also the only hot air balloon port in the State Park system. Balloons can be seen taking flight in the early morning or late evening hours, depending on weather conditions.
Island Lake State Recreational area is accessible from 6301 Kensington Road, Brighton, Michigan, and is open year-round. Come enjoy the sights, sounds and scents of the four spectacular seasons in Michigan!
